A federal court in St Louis has indicted 14 North Koreans for allegedly being part of a long-running conspiracy aimed at extorting funds from US companies and funneling money to Pyongyang’s weapons programmes.
The wider scheme allegedly involves thousands of North Korean IT workers who use false, stolen, and borrowed identities from people in the US and other countries to get hired and work remotely for US firms.
The indictement says the defendants and others working with them generated at least $88m (£51.5m) for the North Korean regime over a six-year period.
North Korea’s mission to the UN did not immediately reply to a request for comment from BBC News.

Some journalists recently defected from X, whose owner is openly hostile to the profession, to Threads, which is more passively hostile. Many, including Jesse Singal, then moved over to Bluesky, which promptly entered a debate over whether to ban him. Singal has spent years in heated arguments over trans kids, and his views, agree or disagree, are well within the mainstream of US and UK politics. (A Politico writer was also briefly banned after taking a wave of criticism for saying, “Leaving X because you don’t like Elon is the kind of purity politics that landed Democrats in this mess to begin with.”)

While Arm-based PCs face some hurdles, their potential for growth remains significant, driven in particular by claims of superior battery life compared to previous generations. Intel, meanwhile, is making improvements to adapt to new market demands.
The PC market is undergoing a significant shift as Arm-based processors gain traction, challenging the long-standing dominance of x86 architecture. However, this transition is not without challenges, as highlighted by Michelle Johnston Holthaus, interim co-CEO of Intel, during the Barclays 22nd Annual Global Technology Conference.

A new survey suggests that Apple Intelligence matters to iPhone buyers, but the majority say that the initial features add little to no value. It remains to be seen whether Genmoji and ChatGPT integration will change that view.
Things are even worse for Samsung smartphones, with an even greater majority of owners saying they can’t see much point in the AI features offered …
