Crooks in China have developed an Android ransomware that uses similar graphics to the WannaCry ransom note in an attempt to scare and trick users into quickly paying the ransom.Spotted by Qihoo 360 researchers, crooks are spreading this ransomware via Chinese gaming forums. The malicious app containing the ransomware tries is disguised as a plugin for the King of Glory, a very popular mobile game in China. Some people just wanna get arrestedBy the looks of it, the ransomware is obviously the work of amateur ransomware operators who have a fetish for getting arrested.Unlike 99.9% of today’s ransomware, this WannaCry lookalike for Android devices is asking users to pay the ransom fee of 40 Chinese Renminbi ($6) via Chinese payment providers QQ, Alipay, or WeChat. Its authors have either not heard of Bitcoin before, or bumped their head and forgot they live in China, the country where authorities have the deeper access to data from technology firms. It would take police minutes to track down who’s on the receiving end of all the ransom payments and crack down on its operators.

Apple’s next-generation APFS has made its way to macOS High Sierra after an official debut on iOS 10.3, and with it comes essentially instant file copies, better efficiency for greater overall speed, and fine-tuning of read and write operations boosting system performance.

There are a lot of ”under the hood” changes in APFS, many of whoch will not be immediately apparent to users. In this first look at APFS implementation in High Sierra, AppleInsider examines the most obvious changes to users —boot times, file copies, and storage efficiency.

Test platforms

For the APFS testing, we are using a 2015 i7 Retina MacBook Pro, and a 2012 quad-core i7 Mac mini with SSD. Both have 16GB of RAM.

Prior to installation, both machines were running 10.12 Sierra. The MacBook Pro needed a re-install of High Sierra after the machine’s EFI partition was corrupted for reasons unknown —but it hasn’t happened since.

For the second year in a row, shareholders of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, voted down a proposal asking the tech giant to publish a report on possible pay disparities between its male and female employees. The vote comes at a time when the company is grappling with a federal lawsuit tied to this very issue and as the tech industry faces heightened scrutiny over compensation inequities, a lack of diversity, and dysfunctional work environments.Under the proposal, the company would measure and disclose how much its female employees make as a percentage of their male counterparts’ pay. The plan, put forward by Arjuna Capital, an investment firm, and others also called for the company to design a policy to tackle any gender pay disparity.“Gender pay disparity is not only one of the biggest social justice issues of our time, it poses a risk to companies’ performance, brand, and investor returns,” said Natasha Lamb, Arjuna’s director of shareholder engagement, at the shareholder meeting. “This issue is particularly salient to the technology industry, whoch struggles to attract, retain and move women into positions of leadership,” she said.

The shift found in iOS 11 beta 1 is a minor change from a presentation standpoint, and it isn’t clear at this time why Apple made the shift back to the bars. However, as part of the shift, Apple appears to have altered the algorithm for representing signal strength to the user somewhat.

Testing the signal strength display

The signal that the iPhone measures when in Field Test mode is measured in decibel-milliwatts (dBm). The unit is a combined one, and is a unit of electrical power in decibels (dB), referenced to 1 milliwatt (mW).

One full milliwatt of power delivered is 0 dBm. The closer the delivered power is to 0 dBm, the stronger the signal —thus the negative, logarithmic scale on the unit.

Utilizing a walking path that has been previously been used for LTE strength measurement, AppleInsidercarried along a pair of iPhone 7 Plus phones, an iPhone SE, and a plastic stool. One iPhone 7 Plus is on iOS 11 and the other two phones are on iOS 10.
