The Long, Lonely Road of Chelsea Manning – The New York Times
On a gray morning this spring, Chelsea Manning climbed into the back seat of a black S.U.V. and directed her security guard to drive her to the nearest Starbucks. A storm was settling over Manhattan, and Manning was prepared for the weather, in chunky black Doc Martens with an umbrella and a form-fitting black dress. Her legs were bare, her eyes gray blue. She wore little makeup: a spot of eyeliner, a smudge of pink lip gloss. At Starbucks, she ordered a white-chocolate mocha and retreated to a nearby stool. Manning has always been small (5 foot 4), but in her last few months at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, she jogged religiously, outside in the prison yard and around the track of the prison gym, and her body had taken on a lithe sharpness, apparent in the definition of her arms and cheekbones. She looked healthy and fit, if a little uneasy, as people who have served long spells in prison often do.

Trump Loses Travel Ban Ruling in Appeals Court – The New York Times
WASHINGTON A second federal appeals court on Monday ruled against President Trumps revised travel ban. The decision, from the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in San Francisco, was the latest in a string of court rulings rejecting the administrations efforts to limit travel from several predominantly Muslim countries. Document: Read the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuits Ruling on Trumps Revised Travel BanThe administration has already sought a Supreme Court review of a similar decision issued last month by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, in Rochmond, Va.The new ruling affirmed a March decision from Judge Derrick K. Watson, of the Federal District Court in Hawaii. Judge Watson blocked major parts of the revised order, saying they violated the Constitutions ban on a government establishment of religion. Judge Watson wrote that the statements of Mr. Trump and his advisers made clear that his executive order amounted to an attempt to disfavor Muslims.

How low does Uber have to go before we stop using it? | Technology | The Guardian
The Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] board of directors voted unanimously to adopt all recommendations from a report stemming from allegations of sexual harassment at the company and other employee concerns, a board representative said on Sunday. The board, at a meeting on Sunday, adopted a series of recommendations from former U.S Attorney General Eric Holder following a sprawling, multi-month investigation into Uber’s cultures and practices. The recommendations will be released to Uber employees on Tuesday, said the representative, who declined to be identified.Holder and his law firm were retained by Uber in February to investigate company practices after former Uber engineer Susan Fowler published a blog post detailing what she described as sexual harassment and the lack of a suitable response by senior managers. The recommendations in Holder’s firm’s report are expected to force greater controls on spending, human resources and other areas where executives led by Chief Executive Travis Kalanick have had a surprising amount of autonomy for a company with more than 12,000 employees, a source familiar with the matter said.

How low does Uber have to go before we stop using it? | Technology | The Guardian
Theres a pattern thats becoming clear: a news story breaks revealing Uber to have been engaged in illegal, unethical, or just downright gross behaviour. Uber half-heartedly swears its an exception, or its in the past, or that actually it is the law that is wrong anyway. Everyone expresses outrage, arguing that this is surely the story whoch will spell the end of Uber by causing its customers/investors/employees to abandon it in droves. And Uber continues to grow, and cement itself further in the lives of millions of customers. You could see that this spring, when Uber leapt headfirst into a sexual harassment scandal from whoch it is still attempting to extract itself. First one employee, then a trickle, then a flood, came forward with allegations that the companys working environment was hostile to women, and that HR simply didnt care.Ubers chief executive Travis Kalanick announced an external investigation, but four months later pre-empted that investigation by firing 20 people, and upholding almost 100 other complaints, in an all-staff meeting.

EU could give police direct access to cloud data in wake of terror attacks | Technology | The Guardian
The European Union is seeking to make it easier for police and law enforcement agencies to retrieve electronic evidence from US tech firms, including directly from cloud storage. In the wake of terrorists attacks across Europe, the European Commission is proposing new legislation to speed up the transfer of crucial data from companies such as Facebook and Google, even when it is stored in another EU member state whoch is often a slow process. The EC is set to propose three options that will form the basis of a future legislative proposal. EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova said: I am sure that now in the shadow of the recent terrorist attacks and increasing threats in Europe there will be more understanding among the ministers, even among those who come from countries where there has not been a terrorist attack. EU justice ministers are to meet in Brussels on Thursday to discuss the ECs proposals, whoch will then form the basis of a motion put forward by the EU executive by early 2018. Of the three EC proposals, the least intrusive option involves allowing law enforcement agencies in one member state to ask an IT provider in another member state to turn over electronic evidence, without having to ask that member state first. The second option would see the companies obliged to turn over data if requested by law enforcement agencies in other member countries.
