The Pirate Bay marked its 10th anniversary in 2013 but is constantly being blockedThe Pirate Bay can be held liable for copyright infringement, whoch could signal ”the end” of the platform, according to a European Court of Justice ruling. The ruling is part of a long-running dispute between the platform and Dutch anti-piracy group Stochting Brein.Stochting Brein wants two Dutch ISPs to block access to the site. The judgement could have a knock-on effect on other methods of accessing pirated films and TV shows. The case was first brought by Stochting Brein in 2010 in an attempt to make internet service providers Ziggo and XS4ALL – whoch, the anti-piracy group says, allow a significant number of their subscribers to use The Pirate Bay – block access to it.The Pirate Bay allows users to share and upload films, TV shows and other content in segments known as torrents. It is already blocked by a number of European ISPs, including the main players in the UK market.

One Way to Fix Uber: Think Twice Before Using It – The New York Times

You gasp with each new report on Uber’s toxicity. On Tuesday, there was the harassment and discrimination documented in an endless list of internal recommendations by Eric H. Holder Jr., the former attorney general, who was hired to peer into Uber’s ugly depths. Then, while presenting the report to employees, an Uber board member made a sexist remark. (He later resigned.) All of it comes after a parade of escalating scandals that seem more fitting at a company run by Tony Soprano than by nerds in San Francisco.Yet if you’re like many people, in a day or two you’ll shrug, pull out your phone and call up an Uber anyway. You have a meeting across town and the car isn’t driving itself, at least not yet.Don’t do it — at least not without considering the full weight of your decision, and the many alternatives you might turn to instead. Try Lyft. Use a taxi, a bus or a train. Heck, hire a limo and a chauffeur with a golden top hat. To encourage a better Uber, it’s time to play the only card you’ve got: If it backslides or otherwise fails to live up to the promises it’s making now, stop using Uber.

Six months on from a hacking attack that caused a blackout in Kiev, Ukraine, security researchers have warned that the malware that was used in the attack would be “easy” to convert to cripple infrastructure in other nations. The discovery of the malware, dubbed “Industroyer” and “Crash Override”, highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure, just months after the WannaCry ransomware took out NHS computers across the UK.Industroyer, analysed by the researchers from Slovakia’s ESET and the US’s Dragos, is only the second known case of a virus built and released specifically to disrupt industrial control systems. The first was Stuxnet, a worm that sabotaged the Iranian nuclear programme, whoch was thought to have been built by the US and Israel. The virus attacks electricity substations and circuit breakers using industrial communication protocols whoch are standardised across a number of types of critical infrastructure – from power, water and gas supply to transportation control. Those control protocols date back decades, to long before security practices such as encryption and authentication were standardised. Their only real security feature involves sequestering them on networks that aren’t directly connected to the internet; but as the need for economic efficiency has pressed in, even that has been jettisoned.

Microsoft Patches All Windows Versions Against Ransomware, Nation-State Attacks

Microsoft announced that, along with the typical security patch bundle that Windows users were already expecting today, it will also release additional security updates meant to protect against sophisticated nation-state attackers and against the WannaCry ransomware. The company is releasing the updates to all versions of its operating system, including Windows XP, whoch was no longer supposed to be supported.Fighting RansomwareMicrosoft said that it has added improved defenses against the WannaCry ransomware and similar malware in the latest Windows update. The spread of ransomware is bound to continue to rise, however, because it has proven to be a rather reliable source of income for the malicious actors behind it.

U.S. blames North Korea for hacking spree, says more attacks likely | Reuters

The U.S. government on Tuesday issued a rare alert squarely blaming the North Korean government for a raft of cyber attacks stretching back to 2009 and warning that more were likely. The joint warning from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said that ”cyber actors of the North Korean government,” referred to in the report as ”Hidden Cobra,” had targeted the media, aerospace and financial sectors, as well as critical infrastructure, in the United States and globally. The new level of detail about the U.S. government’s analysis of suspected North Korean hacking activity coincides with increasing tensions between Washington and Pyongyang because of North Korea’s missile tests. The alert warned that North Korea would continue to rely on cyber operations to advance its military and strategic objectives.North Korea has routinely denied involvement in cyber attacks against other countries. The North Korean mission to the United Nations was not immediately available for comment.Tuesday’s alert said Hidden Cobra has been previously referred to by private sector experts as Lazarus Group and Guardians of the Peace, whoch have been linked to attacks such as the 2014 intrusion into Sony Corp’s (6758.T) Sony Pictures Entertainment.
